Home school: the first month

It's hard to believe we've already conquered our fist month of the new school year.  Time has certainly flown by, more quickly than I ever imagined it would.  Between the boys' various & sundry activities and all our fun fall excursions, we've been extremely busy; perhaps that's why, when I look back, so many days are nothing but a blur!

When we started school four weeks ago, it took us several days to get back in gear (the laziness of summer was difficult to overcome!), but we finally succeeded and have since then fallen into a comfortable groove.  Bub and Noh-man have done amazingly well in all their subjects-- I could not be more proud of them.  Both are working well above grade level and both are facing their new challenges with courage and determination (on most days, at least!  We still have the occasional meltdown, but so far, they've been kept to a minimum). And as for Big Man, he continues to make wonderful progress in penmanship and still loves to color alongside his brothers when they tackle their art assignments.  He's growing up more and more every day --all too quickly, I might add-- and continues to be a wonderful big brother to his little sister.

One of my primary goals for the early part of this year has actually not been academic.  Instead, I've been trying to focus a bit more on "brotherly relations."  You know, how they treat one another (I know, it's surprising that that would even be necessary, right? Ha!).  To do this, we've been studying this verse:

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

Ephesians 4:29

Treating one another with kindness and love does not come naturally to any of us.  The constant bickering, arguing, fighting, and tattling that occur daily in our home are evidence of that!  So we're paying extra attention to the choices we make and the words we use.  In addition, Hubby and I continue to remind the three-- they'll be brothers forever... their bond is precious and their relationship is unique.   Abusing it is absolutely inexcusable.  So... step by step, day by day... we're all striving to control our tongues!

In summary, here are a few snapshots of the past few weeks:

Big Man, still practicing those letters~

And Noh-man, glad to be done with his marker card for art.

Lolli-lu, learning by osmosis~

And Bub, diligently working on his art assignment: creating texture with markers~

Big Man, the accomplished architect!

And Noh-man, practicing away...
Fortunately, both boys are really enjoying their lessons, and so far, I've been able to teach them without too much difficulty.  It's actually been fun!

A little sentence diagramming~

Some leaf dissections and labels~

And of course, Lolli's name in blocks!

Rupert

Aahhh, the wonders of modern veterinary medicine...
Meet Rupert, a tiny Muntjac fawn, delivered by Caesarean-section after his mother was hit by a car. Born three weeks early, he's proving to be quite a fighter! Check out his amazing story here .

A little Field Day fun

Every year one of our local home schooling groups hosts "Family Field Day."  Held at a local park and open to any home schooling families who'd like to participate, this event is usually scheduled for a day in early spring.  This year, however, the powers-that-be decided that autumn might be a nice time for such an occasion, so they planned and prepared and organized to make Field Day: October 4th a huge success.

Kids of all ages arrived with their mommies and daddies in tow, anxious for a morning of fun and fellowship.  Divided into age-appropriate groups, the children were led by an adult chaperone from one event to the next until they completed every activity.  Our family had never participated before so we weren't quite sure what to expect... fortunately, we weren't disappointed.  The morning was perfect-- sunny and a bit cool, though warming to the low 70s-- and the fellowship for us all was delightful.  We all made new friends and the boys, thank goodness, raced and laughed and competed all morning long until we finally left the park-- exhausted!

Here are a few glimpses of our day:
First we have Noh-man winning the "Empty milk jug-filled Sled Race."  He learned quickly that slow and steady wins the race.  Bub, on the other hand, was not so fortunate.  A bit too quick off the starting block, his milk jugs flew off the sled, costing him precious time as he repositioned them one by one.
... Bub took third place in the high jump.  How about that form??

... Big Man, always a sucker for the playground obstacle course!

... Bub & Noh-man, the 2nd place winners of the three-legged race.

Bub with his favorite little sister~

One of the boys' favorites-- the "eat a donut without using your hands" contest.  Neither won.
But Noh-man did have the evidence to prove he gave it his best shot!

One of Big Man's favorites-- the tennis ball toss... what an arm!

Noh-man loved the sack race-- here he is racing with one of his good friends.

And here's my ever-patient sidekick, Lolli-lu.

And my favorite snapshot of the boys... a "3-man chest butt," I believe they called it.

All in all, a great day!  Field Day was tons of fun and the perfect conclusion to our hectic week.  Hopefully there'll be another one in spring; I hate to think we might have to wait a whole year to play like this again!

Mmmm... apples!

So... what to do, what to do. The kitchen counter is covered with freshly-picked apples and we're just itching for something appley-delicious. Baking a pie is at the top of our list, but due to the boys' swim schedule, we've decided to wait until Saturday to give it our best effort-- we'll just have more time that way. In the meantime, we must bake something!!

Well, yesterday, Big Man's preschool teacher came to our rescue-- she sent home a simple recipe, along with her own hearty recommendation, for us to try. Try it we did; the boys gave it two thumbs up and Hubby loved it, as well. You just gotta love it when everybody approves! So, if you're looking for something quick and simple, give this one a shot... it's a keeper!

Apple Crisp

6 Granny Smith apples
1 single layer yellow cake mix
1/2 cup melted butter
1/2 cup sugar
cinnamon to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Peel, core and slice apples. Place them in a 2-qt casserole dish.
Sprinkle cake mix over the top of the apples.
Mix sugar & cinnamon and then sprinkle over the top of the cake mix.
Pour melted butter on the very top and bake for 20-30 minutes, until top is brown and bubbly.
Top with your favorite vanilla ice cream and enjoy!

In his words

Every afternoon at 5:00, I drop Bub and Noh-man at the pool for an hour and a half of swim practice (Hubby then swings by to pick them up on his way home). Today, Big Man, Lolli, and I delivered them as usual and were just about home when, all of a sudden, I had to slam on the brakes. Big Man asked... why? I explained that a little squirrel had darted out in front of the car...

"Just squish him," he replied.

Clearly my youngest son is not quite the animal lover that I am...

Wordless Wednesday

More from the apple orchard~
